8:30 pm
>> al: a win in lambeau will do it. if they knock off the lions tonight, go to 2-0 and go to minnesota next week. first and goal. stafford will throw. it's incomplete as joique bell runs into and was covered by bowman. it will be second and goal. >> cris: they tried a pick down on navorro bowman and, for some reason, pettigrew didn't do it. should have been a walk-in touchdown. try to get the pick and he run inside of bowman and really nowhere to throw the football. >> al: joique falling down. second and goal from the 9. stafford fires. incomplete. dropped. scheffler couldn't hold onto it. tried to jam it in there. carlos rogers covering on the play. third and goal. >> cris: you know, another poor throw here.
8:31 pm
this should be a touchdown. he throws it behind scheffler and you can see him after the play, stafford is going to put his hands on his helmet like, how am i missing these throws? >> al: third down and goal. 1:35 left. over the middle and that is caught by pettigrew for the touchdown. >> cris: that was a laser shot. just one-on-one down the middle of the field. that time, he finally got patrick willis. there we go over here. just going to make a little move and just jam that thing in there. that is your job as a tight end. you got to catch those and get what kind by guys like donte' whitner and hang onto it. >> al: take the one-point attempt here. you saw schwartz. it is all going to amount to recovering the onside kick as simple as that.
8:32 pm
the lions do not have a time-out. so this will make it an eight-point game. hanson makes the score 27-19. and with 89 seconds left, the onside kick will determine the end of the game if san francisco recovers it. or maybe a little drama if detroit recovers it. >> cris: believe me, the last thing jim harbaugh wants to deal with is calvin johnson running down for a hail mary at the end of the game. this is that point in the game where you're going let's end this thing. get your hands team out there. and get it over with. >> al: special teams coach, danny crossman. there is the special teams coach
8:33 pm
of the 49ers. >> cris: this is one of those jobs they used to put me on the hot corner because i was a little taller and they would bounce the balls. not a whole lot of fun. they end up protecting the guy a little bit better now blockers in front allow vernon davis or one of their receivers to come down and make the catch. >> al: so the 49ers with what they call a hand see for the most part. you see vernon davis out there. hanson. remember, it has to go ten yards before a lion can recover it. everybody up at the 45 yard line. now the 49ers are going to take another time-out. >> cris: interesting. there is nobody back in the middle of the field. you could take this kick and kick it to about the 20 and just try to outrun them. who knows.
8:34 pm
those crazy bounces are all around. >> al: absolutely. thinking the same thing. shall somebody should be back there. >> cris: i might take my chances with a crazy hopping ball down there and see if somebody will miss the first swat at it and see if you can get it. >> al: deepest guy was kyle williams. he was 20 yards away. they come out in the same formation this time. yards. >> cris: nobody deep. >> al: you got the right idea. kick it 20 yards and take your chances. that is what he is going to do too. >> cris: he's got a chance! how pretty is that? >> al: well, yeah.
8:35 pm
>> cris: kyle williams, after the two fumbles that cost them a trip to the super bowl last year, that was no easy recovery either. kyle williams had to make a sliding recovery. if this thing bounces around one time, the lions are going to get it. there is only one guy really with a shot at this one. he gets it but you could see the lions were right there. good recovery. >> al: 49ers almost daring them to do that. of course, now everybody awaiting who is going to go to the purell before the handshake. >> cris: a lot easier to do if you're the winning coach in this situation, which now jim harbaugh will be for the second straight year. >> al: you know what is going to happen? in about 20 years, that handshake last year in detroit is going to be part of a beer commercial. did you ever think dennis green
8:36 pm
or jim mora in the melt downs thought they would make hundreds of thousands of dollars from a beer commercial? >> cris: danny green. i have this vision. >> al: you can crown them. >> cris: yeah. crown them. >> al: the 49ers will need one more kneel-down and that is going to do it. and they will go to 2-0. the lions will go to 1-1. the lions take on tennessee. a home week for jim schwartz and nashvil nashville. the niners play three straight home games against buffalo, the giants and seattle in october. there is schwartz and harbaugh. we saw them shake hands before the game.
8:37 pm
handshake after the game. >> cris: they looked tough to me. the 49ers look tough to it me. look like an old ravens kind after team or a steelers kind of a team. >> al: wendy's postgame show is coming up next. the 49ers knock off the lions 27-19. .
8:38 pm
8:39 pm
after beating the packers by eight on the road, the niners come home and beat the lions by eight. now 2-0 after taking care of
8:40 pm
detroit 27-19. our stars of the game are alex smith who threw for two touchdowns and michael crabtree caught six passes and justin smith had five tackles and all three on the field with michele tafoya. >> michele: a chippy game, alex. we can see your nose. you took a big hit on the final drive. how did you good night fis through the all of that? >> the mentality is stay short sided and with you play at a time and not think too far ahead and defense played lights out and especially the first half. put them in the hole with the kickoff return and turnover and holding them to field goals all day long in the red zone and really helped us. just a matter of kind of plugging along on offense. ups and downs throughout the game. a great group of guys. speaks a lot to the kind of character we got. >> michele: you are flourishing under jim harbaugh. what is it about his coaching that works so well for you? >> it's these guys. michael making me look good tonight.
8:41 pm
had a bunch of great catches and making me look good, like i said. a combination of everything. i feel as a quarterback a reflection of the guys around you and i got a great group of guys around me making me look good. >> michele: you two connected well on third down with michael crabtree. what clicked remain there? >> third and long, backed up. get the touchdown. third and eight gets it again. all day long winning. when his number was called, he won. you know, kind of unsung hero. didn't get the touchdown but work horse all night. >> michele: congratulations, alex. go to you, michael. you came up so big on third and long on that final drive. why were you able to put yourself in position to be the guy in that clutch situation? >> just driving. whatever it takes to win, whatever it takes to keep the chains moving. really just doing what i have to do to win. you know? >> michele: there are a lot of you that can do it. vernon davis and frank gore, you all had big nights.
8:42 pm
how explosive do you think this offense can get? >> the sky is the limit. have a good quarterback in alex smith trusting us out there and really just making plays. we can go far, man. as long as alex trusts us and what he is doing and he is talented pretty well so, i mean, we just ready for the next game now. >> michele: michael, congratulations. thank you. let's turn to justin smith and talk a little about the defense. detroit has a potent defense. >> yeah. >> michele: until the end you guys held them to field goals and the final touchdown. how were you able to stop this team? >> they came in and wanted to run the ball in the white box and did a good job of sticking with the run and running the ball. we were able to hold up on them and a team win. >> michele: everyone knows how talented your defense is but what about your mindset you think sets this defense apart? >> i think number one we have a lot of players and, number two, one game at a time mentality and we are able to get another one. >> michele: congratulations on
8:43 pm
another win, justin. thanks a lot. >> thank you. >> tony, the 49ers defense kept stafford, johnson and company off balance all night. they didn't score a touchdown until 1:30 remained. how good is this san francisco defense? >> well, it's very good, bob. matthew stafford was on a roll, 350-yard plus games and until that last drive, he was well under 200. they shut down aaron rodgers last week. they get pressure on you. they stop the run. and they force you into mistakes. and this defense can carry this team to the super bowl. they are getting great play from their offense and alex smith but this is a super bowl caliber defense. >> now to the team that kept the 49ers from going to the super bowl a year ago, the giants. it looked again like eli manning and his group headed for an ugly loss. eli had a very poor first half against tampa bay and comes to life and throws over 500 yards in the game and puts up 25 points in the fourth quarter. how does he keep coming up with
8:44 pm
the fourth quarter magic? >> last year it at the super bowl, rodney harrison says he likes eli manning better in the fourth quarter than tom brady. i think it's his composure. it doesn't matter if it's cruz or nicks or bennett. any of these guys. he believes in them. they believe in him. and this was a big, big fourth quarter win for them today because they would not have wanted to be 0-2 and going on the road on thursday. once again, eli manning just came up huge. >> tony, thanks again. see you next week. we turn to mike florio of profootballtalk. take us through some of the injuries today. >> the biggest came in foxborough. tight end aaron hernandez suffered an ankle injury. even though it's not broken he may miss up to six weeks. in st. louis, steven jackson the star running back left the game in the second quarter and speculation he had been benched
8:45 pm
after the game. coach jeff fisher said that he had a groin injury. for the giants, running back ahmad bradshaw left the game with a sprained neck. he says he is fine and have an mri on monday. david diehl has already had the mri and doctors will read that film tomorrow. the giants fear mcl sprain and not acl injury that could possibly knock him out for the full season. >> mike, thanks. get the latest nfl news from mike florio all week long by tuning into the all new pro football talk which airs tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. and every weekday on the nbc sports network presented by chevrolet. the niners beat the drooins. al and cris wrap it up after this.

8:48 pm
we talked about it a little bit in the fourth quarter of the game. it's baltimore and new england each coming off a pretty excruciating loss today. new england loses and baltimore loses. all of a sudden, a very important september game for each team next week. >> cris: you think what they did in the playoffs a season ago and how dramatic that game was. you have over what is the past decade arguably the best offensive team against one of the best defensive team if not the best, along with pittsburgh over the course of the last decade. and it's just a great matchup. ray lewis and tom brady going head-to-head. we are not going to get to see it forever. it's going to be fun. >> that is next sunday night on "sunday night football" from baltimore. coming up next, except on the west coast, your local news, followed by "dateline." t

8:52 pm
packed house tonight but not everybody had to buy their tickets. the investigative unit looks into a tale of two cities. one that gives free tickets to its officials and one that says it won't. and tonight's game had a larger athan usual police presence and you might be surprised what some officer were wearing. we'll show you that. and a bay area man who was a retired firefighter, disappeared on an amtrak train. his family and authorities are asking for your help. good evening, i'm diane dwyer and we're on a a special time because of the 9ers game. you watched two cities battling on the football field. tonight, the nbc bay area investigative unit discovered a clash of two bay area cities over the ethics of free football tickets. chief investigative reporter, tonys is here with a look at his
8:53 pm
look at the continuing investigation, tony? like you said, getting a ticket tonight wasn't easy unless you're elected. >> the city's mayor and board of supervisors all have access to free tickets. ultimately its a question of ethics and a practice that will end when the 49ers move to the south bay. >> the acceptance of tickets often presents thorny ethical issues. >> reporter: santa clara city attorney is made a decision on the ethic's of free tickets. >> we certainly don't want any perception that any city official is reaping some kind of inappropriate benefit from our relationship with the team. >> reporter: santa clara city leaders won't get free tickets when their stayed crime opens in two years. but in san francisco, free tickets for games at candlestick have become a three-decade tradition for the city's elected leadership. >> why do you think it's ethical in san francisco to accept those
8:54 pm
tickets? >> i'm not going to year view the city attorney's opinion. i think we're doing okay with it and so far there's been no questions. >> so will you take free tickets? >> not for myself. >> reporter: mayor ed lee does not use his free tickets but the city attorney has given the ethical green light for elected leaders to accept free tickets to candlestick park. >> santa clara says it's unethical. san francisco allows it. do you see a conflict there? >> i might see a difference of opinion. >> reporter: last season two tickets to four 49ers game, attend two and giving two to staff members. this season he's decided to turn down the free tickets for personal use. >> did you change your policy because you now believe it's unethical to take free tickets? >> i think there's a value for elected officials to attend important events, especially when theirs national attention on us. >> you can buy the tickets and still go? >> yeah. >> you're getting them free. the city of santa clara says it's unethical to take the
8:55 pm
tickets. >> so i'm not sure if i agree with the city of santa clara's policy but in the future i would probably buy tickets to go to a game. >> why in santa clara is it unethical and why in san francisco is it ethical. >> you'd have to ask the santa clara stiff attorney. our city attorney gave us different advice if the supervisor jeanne avelos 'accepted free tickets a decision he appeared to regret during this interview back in february. >> am i going to be taking tickets from the park to go to 49er games? for myself, personally. >> you told me in the interview last year that you thought maybe you should rethink this policy. >> umm, i could see how people could be, you know, question it. you're here doing your job of reporting on really important news items like this. >> are you being sarcastic, sir? >> no, i'm not, actually. >> reporter: so ultimately it's a question of government ethics
8:56 pm
with apparently, two different answers. coming up tonight at 11:00, more on our investigation into free tickets and why many san francisco supervisors are rethinking their decisions to accept a free ride to candlestick. stchl supervisor avelos and many of his colleagues answered that question. will they take free tickets again this year? that's coming up in two hours. diane? >> thanks a lot. if you have a tip, give us a call. or send us an e-mail to the unit at nbc bay area.com. as you just saw, the 49ers won at candlestick. be. but first, extra security after a numb over of fights and injuries last year and you might be surprised what police were wearing at the game. nbc bay area arturo is at candlestick. >> hi, diane. >> reporter: the 49ers have taken a number of steps to beef
8:57 pm
up curt. some changes are obvious and others are more difficult to spot. the usual contingent of san francisco police officers and county sheriff's deputies patrolling but scattered among the fans are undercover police who are wearing life on'sth lions jerseys and hats and keeping an eye out for any confrontations that might ignite a problem. new regulations say there's a number to report problem to report trouble has taken root. and for the most part, fans are feeling very comfortable with the security that's in place. >> when i actually work security myself, but not here. so i understand the security situation what they have out here and -- >> what you see is adequate? >> yes, i think so. >> this is my first time ever coming to a game so i -- it's been good so far, yeah. >> so you see enough police around. you see enough security.
8:58 pm
>> i feel secure. >> reporter: san francisco police officers on patrol are also focusing on scalpers and those selling fake tickets as well as people selling fake merchandise. and if everyone wore the follow the 49ers fan behavior code of conduct, well within most dispute and arguments would most likely end the way the coaches ended the game tonight with a friendly handshake. live at candlestick park, arturo san diego. >> and raj sat down with them and hear what he has to say about sharing the santa clara stadium with the raiders. friends and family of ciara lamar are marking a difficult anniversary after disappears six months ago today and gathered at the search center in morgan hill for a vigil releasing balloons and saying prayers. the authorities have a suspect in custody in the case but haven't found a body.
8:59 pm
she left for school on march 16th from her home in more ban hill and has not been seen since. >> six months today she's been missing. and we're all still here and we're all still looking. and we come out and we search and it's just heartwrenching to see what they're going through. >> missing sierra. that's still there. and just wanting her to be back home with us. get on with a normal life. >> 21-year-old garcia torrez is charged with kidnapping and murder but has yet to enter a plea. authorities from canada to the bay area are searching tonight for a 69-year-old man from 'san mateo who disappeared this past week. charles doud is a retired firefighter who had planned to take amtrak to visit his family in montreal. he never made it to his
